Kashmir walnut living room
Why Juglans Exists

We Started Because
Someone Had To.

The luxury interior market in India had started using the word "premium" as a synonym for the word "expensive." A lacquered plywood unit with brass-coloured handles was being called high-end. We disagreed.

Juglans was founded by Shreehome Deco, Lucknow, with a single conviction: that India has both the craft heritage and the discernment to sustain a truly world-class luxury interior brand — one that does not need to defer to European references for its credentials.

The name is unambiguous. Juglans Regia is the botanical name of the Kashmiri walnut tree. We named ourselves after the wood because the wood is the argument.

"We are not selling you Kashmir's aesthetic.
We are delivering the thing itself."
The Juglans Regia — Kashmir walnut tree
The Material

A Tree That Refuses
to Be Rushed.

Juglans Regia grows in the Kashmir Valley at an altitude of 5,500 to 7,500 feet. The altitude produces density of grain and depth of colour that no other walnut source on earth can replicate. The trees we use are a minimum of 200 years old at harvest.

After harvest, the timber is air-dried — not kiln-dried — for a minimum of three years before a craftsman touches it. Kiln drying is faster. Air drying produces a more stable, more expressive wood. We are not in a hurry, and we do not want the wood to be in a hurry either.

The grain of Kashmir walnut is close and dark near the heartwood, opening into rich figure near the crotch sections. Every plank is chosen not just for structural quality but for its individual character. No two pieces of Juglans joinery will ever look exactly the same. This is a feature, not a problem.

The Craft

A Thousand Years of
Knowledge in Human Hands.

Kashmir's walnut carving tradition dates to the 15th century, when Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin brought Central Asian craftsmen to the valley. What those artisans brought merged with the local material — dense, dark-grained Juglans Regia — to produce a carving tradition entirely unique to this geography.

Three forms of carving define the tradition. Naqqashi — deep relief floral carving, every motif drawn by hand before the chisel is applied. Khatamband — geometric ceiling inlay in intricate repeating patterns. Jali — open-fret lattice screens that filter light and carry shadow in ways that solid surfaces cannot.

Each of these techniques demands years of dedicated practice before a craftsman is permitted to produce work for a client. The chisels are passed from master to apprentice. The knowledge is not written anywhere. It is held in the hands.

Ghulam Nabi Dar — Padma Shri 2024, Kashmir woodcraft master
The Master

Ghulam Nabi Dar.
Padma Shri 2024.

Ghulam Nabi Dar was born in Safa Kadal, Srinagar — one of the oldest woodworking localities in the Kashmir Valley. He began carving at the age of twelve, learning khatamband and naqqashi from his father in the traditional way: by watching, then assisting, then doing, over years.

In January 2024, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri — the fourth highest civilian honour — in recognition of a lifetime devoted to preserving Kashmiri woodcraft. He did not change what he does when the award arrived. He went back to work the next morning.

Juglans works with craftsmen trained in this direct lineage. When you commission a piece from us, you are not buying an interpretation of Kashmiri craft. You are buying the tradition itself — made current, made permanent, placed in your home.

"Their art is not a product.
It is a thousand years of knowledge
held in human hands."

Juglans is not an option.
It is a decision.
